About MKFI

The Magbassa Kita Foundation, Inc. (MKFI), is a non-stock, non-profit, non-government organization dedicated to the promotion of literacy, poverty alleviation, and peace especially in Mindanao. It was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 1991.

The Magbassa Kita Foundation got its name from the “Magbassa Kita” literacy project, which former Senator Santanina T. Rasul launched in 1966.   “Magbassa Kita" is a Tausug phrase which means “let us read”. What started as a pilot project to address the very low level of literacy in Sulu, becomes, over the years, a foundation, then a program on national literacy adapted by the Philippine government and an international sensation with due recognition from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). 

Its mission is anchored in the philosophy that literacy, education and economic empowerment are preconditions for the meaningful participation of individuals in society.

While maintaining literacy promotion as its major area of concern over the years, MKFI expanded its activities to include livelihood skills training, capa bility building among farmers, development of self-help organi zations and cooperatives, and development of post-literacy materials.

MKFI, however, could not remain insensitive to the deterioration of the quality of life in Mindanao as a result of the armed conflict and the unstable peace and order. Thus in 2001 it launched its peace advocacy program by training women from the areas of conflict as peace advocates and agents of change.
